A victim has been identified in the accident on the I-15 that began as a series of crashes early Saturday morning. Elvai Ruby Gomez, 21, of Escondido was killed after her car, a 1992 Honda Accord, was sideswiped by a 1998 BMW and then was hit by Officer Jason Prokop, in his 2011 Mazda 6. The accident occurred on the I-15 freeway just south of Mira Mesa Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Prokop, an off-duty police officer, got out of his car after the crash and ran over to assist Elvai Ruby Gomez. As Officer Prokop was crossing lanes of traffic to assist Ruby Gomez, he was struck by a 2010 Toyota Corolla driven by an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer.

Both Officer Jason Prokop and Elvai Ruby Gomez were pronounced dead at the scene.
