Workplace Injuries Along the Central Coast
Workplace injuries have been all over the news in the past few weeks. A scaffolding fall in Santa Barbara sent two men to the hospital with a variety of injuries, and a worker reportedly lost a hand in an industrial accident near Lompoc. When construction sites, industrial areas, and other workplaces aren’t safe, employees can get injured, or worse.
Scaffolding Fall in Santa Barbara
On Tuesday, two men were taken to hospital for treatment of multiple injuries after a scaffolding fall at a construction site. According to Santa Barbara’s Noozhawk, the incident happened at the 1200 block of Shoreline Drive sometime before 10:30 a.m. Apparently, two workers fell about 14 feet when their wooden scaffolding gave way, for currently unknown reasons. Both men were taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
Back injuries, broken ankles and a broken wrist were among the injuries reported. The construction crew apparently built the wooden scaffolding onto the house. Officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) are likely trying to determine exactly how this incident happened, and if it could have been prevented.
Hand Injury at Industrial Worksite Near Lompoc
On Tuesday, a victim had to be airlifted from an industrial worksite near Lompoc for a severe hand injury. Initial reports indicate that the hand may have been amputated. Santa Barbara’s Noozhawk reports that the incident happened near the 4400 block of Santa Rosa Road.
First responders rushed to the scene, where apparently somebody’s hand had gotten caught in a piece of machinery. Very few details have been released, and it’s not clear which worksite this happened on. Additionally, there’s no word on the condition of the victim. This incident is likely still under investigation as well.
