CHP’s Grant to Increase Motorcycle Safety

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently issued a press release about a grant they’ve received to help improve motorcycle safety across the state. Their Get Educated and Ride Safe (GEARS) V grant is aimed at decreasing the number of motorcycle crashes and victims in California. This grant is going to fund educational programs and enforcement efforts starting immediately and running until September 30, 2023. Money for this grant is being funded through the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Motorcycle Crash Statistics in California

According to the CHP, from October 1, 2020 to September 30, 2021, there were 7,078 motorcycle-involved crashes in the CHP jurisdiction. Of those, there were 354 deaths and 6,400 injuries. These numbers represented a 3-percent increase over the prior 12 month period.

Motorcycle riders are still some of the most vulnerable roadway users in California and across the nation. With distracted drivers on the roadways, motorcycles are at risk of being injured or killed in what should be, preventable crashes. Helmets can certainly help to improve safety, but ultimately, drivers need to be on the lookout and sharing the road safely.

Educational Programs and Enhanced Enforcement for Motorcycle Safety

During the grant period, the CHP will be participating in several educational efforts. In May, they will be raising awareness about the dangers motorcyclists face on roadway during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Their campaigns will be geared toward promoting the use of U.S. Department of Transportation-compliant helmets for riders. They’ll also be participating in the Share The Road campaign.

In addition to the educational portion of the GEARS program, they will also be enhancing enforcement efforts. There will be additional patrols added to areas with a large volume of motorcycle-involved crashes. Law enforcement officers will be on the lookout for riders and drivers engaging in speeding, improper turns and other unsafe behaviors like driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
