CHP’s Southern Division Street Racing Enforcement Unit (SREU)
The California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Southern Division Street Racing Enforcement Unit (SREU) recently conducted two separate street racing patrols. These patrols were in direct response to a street racing event that was reportedly promoted on various social media outlets. The CHP conducted the operations that took place in the Compton area on September 8th and September 9th. Getting these street racing events shut down immediately is a top priority for the CHP to help keep local roadways safe. It’s not uncommon to see wrecks and even collisions with pedestrians during these types of street racing takeover events.
During the operations, CHP officers issued 72 citations and impounded or stored 40 vehicles. Additionally, 65 arrests were made in connection with these street racing and sideshow events. According to the CHP’s social media post, they also made an additional two arrests for illegal gun possession and another for assault with a deadly weapon (ADW) with a vehicle on an officer.
Illegal Street Racing and Pop-Up Sideshow Events in California
Street racing and sideshows have become a huge safety issue in cities in Central and Southern California. These street takeovers can pop up anywhere, and lead to crashes and unsafe conditions for other motorists and roadway users. Drivers race and reach high speeds in areas that aren’t meant for racing, and pedestrians are at an especially high risk for being injured near these illegal pop-up events.
