Consumer Alert Honda Upgrades Recall to “Do Not Drive” Warning

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a Consumer Alert about Honda upgrading their Takata Alpha Recall to a “Do Not Drive” warning. This is a targeted approach to get the older and most dangerous air bags off of the road. At this time, approximately 8,200 Acura and Honda vehicles remain on the roads with about a 50-percent risk of rupture.

According to the Consumer Alert, Honda has issued a “Do Not Drive” warning for certain 2001-2003 Acura and Honda vehicles that still have unrepaired Takata Alpha driver side air bag inflators. If you have one of these vehicles, do not drive it. This is an immediate and urgent life-saving message. Thankfully, replacement parts are available for free for these vehicles.

Older Takata Air Bags Are More Dangerous

With Takata air bags, the older they get, the more likely they are to rupture. Age and heat are two particularly dangerous factors with these defective air bag inflators. These particular model year vehicles have a 50-percent chance of rupturing. If one of these air bags rupture, they can send shrapnel into your face, neck and chest area. Injuries are likely to be fatal. The air bag inflators on these vehicles are now over 20 years old. Even a minor crash could cause one to rupture.
