NHTSA Consumer Alert on Steering Wheel Decals

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a press release about a consumer alert regarding the dangers of steering wheel decorative emblem decals. The NHTSA is currently advising motorists against buying or using steering wheel decorative emblem decals. These decals can come off of a steering wheel in a crash and cause serious injury to motorists.

Rhinestone Steering Wheel Decals Are Dangerous Hazards

According to the consumer alert, at least one driver has been seriously injured by these decorative decals. That driver suffered loss of sight in one eye. Apparently, the aftermarket rhinestone emblem came off of the steering wheel during a crash and hit the driver in the face and eye area.

Rhinestone Steering Wheel Decals Become Projectiles

Typically, these decals are made of a metal or plastic plate, and might be covered with rhinestones or other shiny decorations. The back of the decal has an adhesive surface, and it covers the vehicle’s logo in the center of the steering wheel. In the event of a crash, the deploying of an airbag can turn the sharp metal pieces and decal into a projectile, which is then aimed at the driver’s face. This can put the driver at risk for serious injury or even death.

Aftermarket Steering Wheel Emblems Are Not Safe

These aftermarket decals aren’t permanent parts of a vehicle’s steering wheel, and they can easily become dislodged during a crash. Additionally, adding this type of decal can also cause your air bag to not function properly, putting you at further risk for injury or death in the event of a crash.

NHTSA: Do Not Use Steering Wheel Decals

At this time, the NHTSA is urging consumers to avoid using or buying these dangerous steering wheel decals. If you already own one of these types of decals, you should remove it from your steering wheel as soon as possible.
