NHTSA’s 2022 Summer Driving Tips

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has a variety of really important safety tips for motorists before they hit the road this summer. With many families in California and throughout the nation gearing up for road trips and vacations, it’s absolutely necessary to make sure your vehicle is safe and ready for the journey ahead. The NHTSA has information on issues like mechanical preparation and hot weather safety, so you can be informed and prepared before your big trip.

Prior to a summer road trip, it’s a good idea to make sure your vehicle is up-to-date on any routine maintenance issues like oil changes. This is a good time to make sure all fluids are topped off. Don’t forget to check the tires as well. You may need to have them rotated, balanced, or topped off with air.

Hot Weather Concerns

In hot weather, your air conditioner may have to work much harder. Get your AC checked prior to leaving town. You don’t want to be stuck on the road in a hot vehicle. A broken AC can be particularly dangerous for small children, older adults, and pets. Rolling down the windows may not be enough to keep everybody cool.

Heatstroke is also a major concern during the summer months. No matter what, don’t ever leave a child or pet in your vehicle unattended. It doesn’t matter if the windows are down or if the vehicle is still running. It’s not worth the risk. Temperatures inside of a vehicle can reach deadly levels in a matter of minutes, even on a relatively cool day.

Buckle Up For Every Tip

Finally, the most important thing you can do to protect yourself in the event of a car accident is buckle up. It doesn’t matter if you’re just driving across your local neighborhood or across the country, you need to buckle up. Also, make sure children are restrained in age and size-appropriate car seats and booster seats. Buckling up for every trip will help to set a good example for the children too, so don’t get casual about seat belt safety.
