NHTSA’s 420 Impaired Driving Prevention Campaign

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently gearing up for their 420 Drug-Impaired Driving Prevention Campaign. This campaign will run on April 20, 2022, which is also known as 420. This date has become something of a holiday for marijuana users, and it’s not uncommon to see an increase in marijuana use on and around this date. Unfortunately, that means it’s also possible to see an increase in injury causing and potentially fatal drug-related car crashes happening during this time too.

This year, the NHTSA is teaming up with various State and local traffic safety agencies throughout the U.S. to help spread the message about the dangers of drug-impaired driving. Additionally, law enforcement agencies may also be stepping up their efforts to deter drugged driving and also to get drug-impaired drivers off of the roads.

Marijuana Use Behind The Wheel

Even if you think you feel fine, you shouldn’t be driving if you’ve been using marijuana. Marijuana can slow down your reaction times, impair cognitive performance and make it more difficult to keep a steady lane position. When it comes to marijuana use, or any type of drug that alters your cognition and alertness, it doesn’t belong behind the wheel.

If you plan on celebrating 420 with marijuana this year, make sure you stay home or you have a designated driver. Whatever you do, don’t drive if you’ve been using marijuana. The NHTSA is also reminding motorists that buzzed driving is drunk driving, so even if you’re just feeling a little “buzzed,” you still shouldn’t be driving. Keep yourself safe, and help to keep roadways in California safe this April 20th and all year long.
