Californians Cleaning Up Roadways and Local Streets
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) recently issued a press release about the “Spring Into Action” roadway cleanup event. According to Caltrans, thousands of people in California worked in more than 600 places to help cleanup local roadways, streets and public places across the state. The Spring Into Action event happened during an 11-day period from March 17th through the 27th. This program was part of the Clean California initiative, which is a multiyear cleanup effort led by Caltrans to remove trash, create thousands of jobs and engage communities to help transform public spaces.
Eleven Days of Cleanup on California Roads
In addition to cleaning up local roadways, there were tree planting and gardening events, as well as educational programs and temporary art installations. During the 11-day period, 64 million pounds of trash were collected, and over 10,500 volunteers participated in the events. The Spring Into Action program is part of the Clean California plan that was launched in July 2021. Caltrans and local partners have removed 1.45 million cubic yards of litter from state highways, which is the equivalent of more than 24,400 tons of trash. That’s enough garbage to fill the Rose Bowl more than three and a half times.
Improving Safety for Drivers and Motorcycle Riders in California
It’s not just about beautification though. Removing litter from roadways helps to keep them safer for motorists and roadway users. Garbage, litter, debris and other roadway hazards can be a major source of danger for motorcycle riders, motor vehicle drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Cleaner roadways mean safer roadways. Motorcycle riders in particular are at a particularly high risk of crashing when they’re riding on roads with a lot of litter. A motorcycle can’t stop on a dime or maneuver as quickly or as safely as a car or truck. Garbage on the highway can be life threatening.
