NHTSA on Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month 2022

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently gearing up for Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in May. Throughout the Month of May, they will be publicizing four major public safety campaigns. The campaigns are Motorist Awareness of Motorcycles, Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over, Rider Safety and Share the Road. The main theme running through each one of these campaigns is going to be improving overall safety for motorcycle riders on U.S. roadways.

Motorist Awareness of Motorcycles

Since they’re still one of the most vulnerable roadway user groups, motorcycle riders are counting on drivers to be aware of them. Motorists need to understand standard and predictable motorcycle driver behaviors and how they can navigate safely around motorcycle riders.

Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over

Motorcyclists have to obey all the same rules of the road as larger motor vehicle drivers, and that includes laws about intoxication. The Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is raising awareness about the dangers and consequences of riding a motorcycle while intoxicated.

Rider Safety

The Rider Safety campaign has a variety of tips to help motorcycle riders improve their personal safety. The most important thing a motorcycle rider can do to improve his or her safety is to wear a helmet. Jackets, boots, gloves and other protective clothing can also increase personal safety. Additionally, taking a class and making sure you’re well versed on the rules of the road will also help to increase your safety while riding.

Share The Road

Finally, the Share The Road public safety campaign is all about promoting motorcyclist awareness and safety for motorcycle riders and motor vehicle drivers. Most importantly, drivers are reminded to avoid distracted driving in all forms. The easiest way to Share The Road is to make a commitment to distraction-free driving. If you’re looking at your phone, you’re putting your life and the lives of others in danger.
