NHTSA’s Distracted Driving Prevention Ad Council
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is continuing to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving with various public safety campaigns. According to the NHTSA, over the 10-year period from 2012 to 2021, more than 32,000 people were killed in distracted driving crashes. A big contributor to distracted driving crashes is still cell phone use. From sending text messages to checking social media, cell phone use behind the wheel has become a dangerous and deadly epidemic on U.S. roadways.
Cell Phones Behind The Wheel
The data is clear. Cell phones and driving just don’t mix. If you’re driving, you don’t need to be on your phone. Even looking at your cell phone to read a quick text can take your eyes off of the roadway and your mind off of the task of driving. The call or text can wait. Put your phone in your backseat, and place the ringer on silent, so it’s not tempting. It’s not worth risking your life or the lives of others.
Hands Free Isn’t Significantly Safer
It’s also important to know that hands free devices haven’t been shown to be significantly safer than hand held devices. In fact, they can even lure people into a false sense of safety. Just because you’re not manually handling a cell phone, that doesn’t mean that it’s still not a distraction. Even talking on the phone through your vehicle’s bluetooth can be distracting. Anything that takes your mind off of the task of driving is considered a distraction.
