On Thursday afternoon, a semi-truck transporting lithium-ion batteries overturned and sparked a fire in San Pedro. According to ABC 7, the incident occurred around noon in the 900 block of North Seaside Avenue. The crash forced a closure of the 47 Freeway between Harbor Boulevard on the west side of the Vincent Thomas Bridge and the 710 Freeway to the east. A hazardous materials team was dispatched to the crash site and fire crews created a 1,000-foot buffer zone around the flames. The driver of the semi-truck was uninjured.

The fire created from the batteries could not be extinguished using water or foam. At the time of the report, the fire had been burning for 12 hours and could continue for up to 48 hours.
